An armored truck guard was shot and killed while working at a Dallas bank this morning.
The guard, 46-year-old Cresencio Borquez of Melissa, was servicing an ATM in the parking lot of the Chase Bank branch at 2530 Fort Worth Avenue, in North Oak Cliff.
Police say Borquez was shot while loading money into the machine. Police spokesman Sgt. Warren Mitchell said the gunman was apparently trying to rob the ATM. He got into a scuffle with the guard, and they exchanged shots. Witnesses tell CBS 11 News the suspect then ran across the street, got into a car where another man was waiting, and drove away.
"These guys were so brazen it appears they didn't care who was here or who saw them," said Senior Corporal Janice Crowther, a Dallas Police spokeswoman. "They drive up, they attempted to do a job and run, and without thinking they killed somebody in the process."
Mike Carter witnessed the shooting. He had just dropped off a prescription at a pharmacy across the street. He got into his pickup and watched the gunman run up to the guard. "I seen him grab somebody and then I put it in park," Carter said. "I thought he was just robbing somebody, and I started to get out and I then heard shots, and I seen him run out, and I chased him, but I lost him."
Video from Chopper 11 showed a Brinks truck parked near the ATM as police combed the scene for evidence.
Officers are looking for a suspect who fled the scene.
Detectives say it's possible that the crime is connected to another armored car shooting on Camp Wisdom Road on October 10, 2008.
Dallas Independent School District officials temporarily locked down nearby Stevens Park Elementary school and Raul Quintanilla Sr. Middle School as a security precaution today. Both were quickly returned to normal status.
Borquez's neighbors tell CBS 11 he was a hard worker, and how his family loved living in Melissa. "They were just telling me how much they loved this neighborhood and being out here" says neighbor Elena Sauceda.
Brinks, the armored car company Borquez worked for, is offering a $50,000 reward for information on the suspect.
