Skateboard Store Fights Management To Stay Open

SOUTHLAKE (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The owners of a Southlake Skateboard shop say they're being forced out of the Southlake Town Center.
Two friends decided to make their dreams a reality and opened the Collective Skateboard Shop in 2007.
According to Andy Ohlin, one of the store's owners, Collective Skateboard was doing fine until they received a letter from Inland Southwest Management in January informing store owners they had to pay some $23,000 in maintenance fees.
The owners of Collective Skateboard say they already pay about $7,000 for rent and that the amount includes maintenance fees.
Ohlin says given the current economy his store was already hurting and now there's no way they can stay open. Ohlin told CBS 11 News that he thinks management is getting rid of 'mom and pop' stores to bring in national and bigger chains.
An online movement has been started to keep Collective Skateboard open.
Inland Southwest Management released this statement to CBS 11 News: "Over the past year and a half, Inland Southwest Management has worked closely with the owners of Collective Board Shops to keep them operating at Southlake Town Square. Unfortunately, after significant efforts, we were unable to come to an agreement on revised rent terms. Inland Southwest Management works hard to maintain a strong mix of local and national tenants. We plan on marketing the space to new users, both national and local, but have not had any discussions to date. Southlake Town Square is a premier shopping destination in the Dallas area, and we think its outstanding location and unique tenant mix will be very attractive."
We asked the managers of several other stores in Southlake Town Center if they had received letters about maintenance fees from Inland Southwest. None had. We asked Inland Southwest if it had sent similar letters to any other tenants. So far, we have not received a response to that question.
