American Airlines To Lay Off 55 In Columbus
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ―
American Airlines has informed Ohio officials that it intends to lay off 55 workers in Columbus after the summer travel season.
In a filing with the state, the airline says it can no longer operate at current levels and must make some "very tough, but immediate" decisions.
Fort Worth-based American says the job cuts will come "on or around" Sept. 5 as the company reduces service in Columbus for the fall. Nonstops to St. Louis will be dropped and there will be fewer flights to New York, Boston and Dallas.
The layoffs will affect ground workers, including baggage handlers and aircraft cleaning crews.
A union official planned to argue against the cuts Wednesday during a meeting with American Airlines officials in Dallas.
