American Airlines To Cut 200 Pilot Jobs

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 News) ― American Airlines says it's going to eliminate 200 pilot jobs.

The cuts are the latest in a series of job reductions for the Fort Worth-based airline.

The airline has not made public the details of its plan, but in a statement a spokesman says it has made a proposal to the pilots' union that could reduce the number of pilots who lose their jobs.  Spokesman Tim Wagner said the plan it proposed to the Allied Pilots Association "would provide financial incentives for senior captains who may be ready to voluntarily leave and create advancement opportunities for junior pilots."

If the union accepts the plan, Wagner said, it could reduce the number of pilots American plans to furlough.

Wagner cites the slow economy as the reason for the upcoming cuts.  No timetable was provided.

High fuel costs are hammering the airline industry.  American has said it expects to spend around $10 billion on fuel this year.  That's up from $6.7 billion in 2007.

The company has already announced heavy job cuts in several areas.  Last month the airline said it plans to cut about 8% of its workers.  While it has not given a specific number of jobs it plans to cut, an 8% reduction would represent about 6,000 workers.
