Regents Fire Baylor University President Lilley
GRAPEVINE (AP) ―
The Baylor University board of regents has fired President John M. Lilley, citing his rejection of the board's plan to replace him at the end of his contract next year.
The board of the world's largest Baptist university voted Thursday to fire Lilley during its annual summer retreat, held this year in suburban Dallas-Fort Worth. Lilley had been president since November 2005.
In a release, board Chairman Howard K. Batson said the firing will "unite Baylor's many constituencies and move the university forward in its next period of growth and renewal."
Board members had offered to let Lilley complete his five-year contract and begin their search for a new president in January. But board members say Lilley rejected that offer.
Regent Harold Cunningham has been named acting president. He is a former vice president for special projects and former vice president for finance and administration.
