DISD To Reward Teachers For Student Grades

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―

Children often get rewarded for good grades in school. Now, the Dallas Independent School District is about to do the same thing for teachers.

Teacher groups have fought against the concept of rewarding or punishing teachers based on how well their students perform in class. That fight is over. Performance pay is on its way. More cash will be offered to instructors based on the performance of their students.

"In transforming the district, you have to transform the performance pay piece of it," explained DISD spokeswoman Kim Olson, "to reward the things we value the most in this district. And the thing we value the most is student performance."

DISD educators who teach core subject areas could earn up to $8000 in bonuses, based on the academic success of children in their classrooms. A total of 59 DISD schools will take part in the initiative, primarily those that have struggled with student test scores and low state ratings.

Educator Kathy Brothers still isn't completely sold on the performance pay plan. "I think every teacher wants to be good and effective. I think it's a flawed assumption that we can quantify and qualify a human interaction."
