DISD Schools Could Be Closed For Poor Performance
3 Schools Could Make TEA's Academically Unacceptable For 4th Time
Three town meetings are scheduled this week to discuss the academic ranking of three Dallas ISD schools.
The public is invited to attend as the district will provide parents/guardians, students, staff and other community members to information about the contingency plans if H. Grady Spruce High School, W.W. Samuell High School and E.B. Comstock Middle School are deemed Academically Unacceptable by the Texas Education Agency.
Academically Unacceptable is the state's lowest rating.
This would be the fourth consecutive year the schools could receive that rating. TEA's definition of Academically Unacceptable means the school did not meet state passing standards: TAKS and dropout rate and/or graduation rate.
If any of the schools gets that rating again this year--and district leaders think it's likely, at least for Spruce--the state could close it permanently. Texas law requires the commissioner of education to "order alternative management or closure of a campus" for schools that receive the lowest rating in four consecutive years.
District officials must submit a plan to agency detailing learning improvements and compliance with the state mandate.
In the case of Spruce High School, DISD leaders are planning to move the majority of students to other campuses and reconfigure it as a Career Center for ninth graders.
The meetings will be held as follows:
Tuesday, June 17
Spruce High School Auditorium
9733 Old Seagoville Road
Wednesday, June 18
Samuell High School Auditorium
8928 Palisade Drive
Thursday, June 19
Comstock Middle School Auditorium
7044 Hodde Street
All meetings begin at 6:30 p.m.
