After 300+ Laid Off, DISD Hiring More Teachers
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Despite massive teacher and staff layoffs to save money, the Dallas Independent School District is actively trying to fill jobs.
Close to 300 teachers either retired or quit to help reduce the number of people laid off. The amount was more than officials thought would give up their jobs.
As a result, there are positions open in DISD. The district posted 60 jobs for math, science and bilingual education teachers.
District officials say teachers who were laid-off will be first in line for the newly-posted jobs. "Now we can fill those positions with employees hopefully that are still interested in coming back, and we're in the process of contacting them," said DISD spokesperson Jon Dahlander.
Candidates will have to qualify for the position. Not all of the jobs can be filled by people who were laid off.
The head of the Dallas chapter of the National Education Association calls the whole thing embarrassing.
"We got the left hand not talking to the right hand," said Dale Kaiser, NEA Dallas. "We just laid off 375 teachers, surely we don't have these vacancies."
