50+ Laid-Off DISD Teachers Getting Their Jobs Back

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Some Dallas teachers are back in the classroom Wednesday after losing their jobs two weeks ago.

The Dallas Independent School District fired hundreds of educators in an effort to reduce a multi-million dollar budget shortfall. More than 600 DISD employees were laid off earlier this month, sparking protests from teachers.

From fires to rehires, the entire process can seem a bit confusing. But district officials say it's simple.

"We had more teachers resign after the reduction process started, and that created additional vacancies," said Jon Dahlander, a spokesperson for DISD.

With 11,000 teaching positions within the district, vacancies are always popping up. Since new openings come up every day, the district gave schools the green light to begin filling open positions, giving priority to people who were laid off 2 weeks ago.

DISD said the district hired back more than 50 teachers, assistant principals, and teacher's assistants on Wednesday.
