DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―
The day after
approving a plan to cut 550 teachers from schools in the Dallas Independent School District, officials must now determine who will be laid off.
Thursday, trustees of the Dallas Independant School Board passed a motion to go foward with district-wide layoffs in an effort to
save millions of dollars.
"If we try to move ahead and make sure to no child will be left behind, then it doesn't make sense to remove teachers from the classroom," said biology teacher Gina Roberts.
School district administrators met to start identifying teachers who will lose their jobs. Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa will evaluate teachers based on the following criteria:
1. Is the teacher certified?
2. Does the teacher have the state license to teach?
3. Based on evaluations, what is the teacher's effectiveness in the classroom?
4. A teacher's length of service will account for some value.
"There is still some fear, some anxiety because specific names have not come out," said Rena Honea, Alliance A.F.T. a teacher's union in Dallas. "It's still the pins and needles. Am I staying? Am I going?"
Termination notices will be sent starting next week.
