DeSoto H.S. Student Paralyzed At Football Practice
DESOTO (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Corey Borner, 16, suffered a serious spinal cord injury Wednesday during football practice at DeSoto High School.
According to his coach, Borner has some movement below the neck, but doctors say he is paralyzed.
According to Head Football Coach Claude Mathis, Borner "is a very strong young man," and his long-term prognosis is not yet known.
DeSoto school officials say the injury happened during a routine practice at Eagle Stadium.
Head Athletic Trainer Scott Galloway said the high school sophomore executed the play the way he had been trained.
"He did use correct form. The coaches cover that every year. Every now and then, your body can be put in a position that it just doesn't like," said Galloway. "In this case, his head may have been just a little bit more tilted forward."
"Unfortunately, in football, it's such a violent sport that accidents happen," he continued.
Coach Mathis said Borner's family has been at his side at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Mathis said his parents are both emotional and optimistic that he may recover.
