Water Leak Damages Brand New Lewisville School

LEWISVILLE (CBS 11 News) ―

A leaking pipe caused serious damage at a Lewisville elementary school.

School officials say there is nearly two inches of water on the lower level of Lakeland Elementary, located on Fox Avenue just east of Edmonds Avenue.

The damage apparently happened over the weekend of August 2nd, after a pipe leaked in the foundation crawl space. Unfortunately the leak wasn't discovered until Monday August 4th and most of the first floor was already flooded.

"One of the major pipeline connections came loose," LISD spokesperson Dean Tackett.

On Tuesday crews worked to clean up and repair the brand new two-story school. Construction on the new building was finished just two weeks ago.

Apparently the water did so much damage, it will cost the district nearly a $1 million to replace carpeting, drywall and other damaged construction.

"We had about two or three inches of water in about 26 classrooms," Tackett said as he pointed to a water line on a wall.

Until cleanup is complete and repairs have been made the school building has been closed to the public and unauthorized staff.

"The teachers had just came in the week before and put down all their teaching supplies and boxes in preparation to move into the building. Then the water came up," explained Tackett.

Because of the flooding some events at the school have been postponed or moved.

Registration for Lakeland Elementary will be held Wednesday, August 13 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m., at the nearby Lillie Jackson Early Education Center, located at 1651 S. Valley Pkwy.

School leaders say they expect the school to be ready for the first day of classes on August 25, but are postponing "Meet the Teacher Night" from Friday, August 22, until after the start of school.

Tackett says because of the dedication of more than 100 workers he's confident repairs will soon be complete. "We will have school. We will have kids and we will be ready come Monday the 25th."
