TEA Commissioner To Meet With DISD Superintendent

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Texas Education Agency commissioner Robert Scott is set to meet with Dallas Independent School District superintendent Michael Hinojosa on Friday in Dallas.

The meeting will reportedly include discussions about the district's fiscal management and any need to initiate state oversight. This includes the possible appointment of a conservator.

The TEA has taken similar action in a number of local districts recently, including Lancaster Independent School District.

This comes after a DISD board committee went behind closed doors on Monday to talk about Hinojosa's job performance.

Board members have created a list of concerns after Hinojosa announced that the school district ended the last fiscal year with a $64 million deficit, and were facing an $84 million deficit this year.

The budget deficit forced the DISD to eliminate more than 1,000 jobs, 375 of which belonged to teachers. Despite these changes, the DISD still has a $16 million deficit this year.

Hinojosa apologized for the layoffs on Wednesday. "I'm obviously the Chief Executive Officer and there have been other staff and we all share responsibility in this," he said. "But our responsibility is to find solutions and move forward. The solutions were very painful."

"My responsibility is to see us through this and make sure we move forward," Hinojosa continued, "and I fully intend to continue working in the school district."
