Report: Bush Library Deal Finalized By End Of Feb.
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The president of the George W. Bush Library Foundation is picturing green space, pedestrian access to the dart rail station and a connection to campus.
That's according to a deposition that Mark Langdale gave on February 7. The document also states the agreement with SMU is almost complete and could be open to visitors in just five years.
"I'm hoping to have this finalized by the end of this month," he said. Design drawings, he said, could be complete by the end of July.
The location is also detailed. According to the deposition, the library would be located between SMU Boulevard and Central Expressway, extending 11.5 acres south and 4 acres north.
The deposition is part of an on-going legal battle over the former University Gardens condominium site. Gary Vodicka is the lead plaintiff in the case against SMU.
"They railroaded all these neighbors of mine out of their home and lied to them and paid them about a third of what their property was worth," said Vodicka. "And I said, 'The railroad stops here.'"
In the deposition, Langdale said, "I have concluded that the project can be built without the University Gardens land."
In another scenario, he said the library complex "would only encroach upon only a small part of the University Gardens site."
Vodicka doesn't believe the controversial tract of land will be left out of the plans. "I think that's just wishful thinking," he said.
The deposition also details a conversation between Langdale and President Bush about the library. In it, the President said he's hopeful and excited about it.
