A&M Regents Pick Interim Replacement For Murano

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) ― Texas A&M University System regents have accepted Elsa Murano's resignation and named the CEO of their Galveston campus as interim president of the flagship university.

Bowen Loftin's appointment was announced Monday after the board of regents met in executive session. Loftin has been vice president and CEO at Texas A&M University at Galveston since 2005. His tenure included a tragic 2008, when Hurricane Ike struck Galveston a few months after a school sailboat accident killed one man.

The 49-year-old Murano resigned Sunday, less than two weeks after a scathing performance review that included low marks for leadership and management. She was the first Hispanic and first female president in the 132-year history of Texas A&M, which didn't admit women on an equal basis until 1971.

Texas A&M officials said they hope to have a permanent replacement within six months.
