TEA Gives School Districts Their Report Cards
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The public schools of Texas have received their grades from the state.
The accountability ratings from the Texas Education Agency were released to the public statewide Friday, and in some North Texas school districts the news is good.
If you guage your schools effectiveness using the Accountability scale, you probably want to see what that scale looks like.
Exemplary means 90 percent of tested students passed the required TAKS exams. Recognized means at least 75 percent passed the tests. Acceptable is a 70 percent passage rate in english/writing, but lower passing percentages for math and science. Academically Unacceptable is the lowest rating, a mark no public school wants to receive.
Most DFW school districts are right in the middle with districts in Dallas, Fort Worth, Keller, and Plano being some of the larger districts rated as acceptable.
Southlake's Carroll ISD was given the top rating, while Lancaster ISD was named an unacceptable district.
Why does one school or district outperform another? There are a variety of variables, but the principal of Dallas' top rated Rice Learning Center, a school where 90 percent of the students are low income, says it starts with experienced teachers dedicated to the students and the community where the school sits.
