DISD Principal Doesn't Evacuate After Bomb Threat
DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―
Frustrated parents after a North Texas principal chooses not to evacuate his school following a bomb threat.
The incident happened at the Thomas Edison Learning Center in Dallas.
Friday some parents said school officials potentially put their children in danger by their actions, or lack there of.
It's not unusual for schools to receive bomb threats, but what happened at Edison Friday raises questions about whether students should be evacuated when school administrators learn of threats.
After Edison school principal Jimmy King learned of the threat Dallas police were contacted. When officers arrived they found students in class because, according to authorities, the principal believed the call was a prank and chose not to send students outside.
CBS 11 News spoke with some students after school and many said they weren't even aware there had been a bomb threat.
Parents say regardless of the principal's perception about the call, it should have been handled as a potential threat.
"Parents should be informed. I'm just in fear for my daughter right now, as a matter of fact," parent Antonio Alvarado said. "I just want to know what's going on and who called the bomb threat and why there was nothing done about it."
Monica Hernandez' child attends Edison and she said, "Even if it was a prank, or not, he should have still evacuated the school, for the kids' safety because there's no telling if it [the threat] was real or not."
A DISD spokesman said there is no standing policy concerning bomb threat evacuations and that the decision is up to the principal. Dallas police say that whoever controls or owns the property makes the final decision about an evacuation.
