Two school buses from the Irving Independent School District were involved in a crash in Dallas Friday afternoon.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. Friday in the southbound lanes of I-35E, just south of LBJ Freeway, and blocked the righthand two lanes of traffic.
Both of the buses were filled with students at the time of the crash. They were returning to Lee Elementary School in Irving after a field trip to the Lewisville Environmental Center when the second bus rear-ended the first bus. Investigators say a car in front of the first bus was driving slowly. Students on board the first bus knew what was happening. "The bus behind us couldn't stop and we got hit in the back and then the window shattered" said student Kiran Kudumula.
The driver of the second bus was taken to the hospital with a broken leg. The other driver was also taken to the hospital complaining of injuries. In addition, five of the students were transported to Children's Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The uninjured students waited on the side of the highway while emergency crews were on the scene.
Parents of some of the students came to the accident scene to pick up their kids. Lizabeth Carrillo was one of the parents who came to the scene "when I went to school they were saying about that so I went back over here and I called my daughter and she was ok."
Two new buses were brought in to take the student back to school. School authorities say one of the drivers is a veteran bus driver for the schools. The other was hired in September, and will go through training again. Dallas Police are investigating the crash.
