More Local Cities Ban Cells In School Zones
NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
On the first day of school; a few North Texas cities experienced a first of their own.
"I think it's a very good idea. I think people are too distracted when they are talking on their cell phones," mother Kelly Taylor said. "They're not paying attention to what's going on around them."
Police in Wylie patrolled school zones to make sure drivers were off their cells and on the ball.
"If my kid got hit, I would be mad," mother Chelsea Snell said adamantly. "Both hands should be on the wheel and off the cell phone."
Monday, Dallas police were also on the lookout for motorists who 'dial' and drive. Although officers found school zone problems, they only wrote one ticket for violating the new cell phone ban.
Most parents support banning hands on cell phone use in school zones, but some believe the law is simply unenforceable and unnecessary.
"If you can't drive and talk on the cell phone at the same time, then you shouldn't talk on your cell phone at all," father Bob Bauer said. "It's like chewing bubble gum and walking."
On this first day of school, police in Highland Park and Wylie only issued warnings for cell phone violations. Highland Park is believed to be the first city in Texas to impose a school zone cell phone ban. Since December, Highland Park police have written nearly 400 cell phone citations.
Dallas issued 57 citations in school zones, but they were all for speeding.
While Dallas, Wylie and Irving joined the growing number of North Texas cities banning hands on cell phones around schools, others cities - such as Plano and Richardson - are waiting for more proof that cell phones cause more accidents.
