Dallas Woman Fights Dangers Of Kids In Hot Cars

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― It's already happened at least once in North Texas this summer.  Last week a Watauga woman was arrested for leaving her baby inside a locked car.

In that case, a passerby broke a window and got the baby out safely.  But it doesn't always end well.

That's why a Dallas woman is continuing her campaign to put a stop to it.

In September, a new state law will require child care providers to establish transportation safety training.  It's called Jacob's Law.

Jacob Fox was four years old in 2006 when he died after being left inside a van operated by a Dallas child care center.

His mother, Avonda Fox, fought in her son's name for the new law.  She says Texas has the highest rate of kids being left in hot cars.

The new law requires owners, operators and day care center employees to complete a minimum of two hours of transportation safety.

Fox partnered with Dallas-based Child Care Group to create the SOS plan: Search Our Seats. Wall stickers, small placards for rearview mirrors and key chains are placed in vans as reminders to adults transporting children.

"Our hope is to save children," Fox says of her partnership with the ChildCare Group.

"The legislation requires every provider receive annual training," says Rhonda Rakow of the ChildCare Group.

"It happens," Fox said. "So I just hope with 'Search Our Seats' and the law, that people will do more so this won't continue to happen."
