Mom Says Bully Claims Met With Transfer Advice

Oak Cliff Principal Tells Family To Transfer Schools, Mom Says

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ―

A lot of parents deal with this: their child treated harshly by fellow students. On Friday, one Dallas mother says when she told her daughter's school principal of a recent  assault, the school leader suggested a transfer to another school.

Dominique Hanes lives in Oak Cliff and attends Oliver Wendell Holmes' Classical Academy program.

On Friday, the award-winning student's mother filed a complaint with the Dallas Police Department after the girl says four other girls assaulted her and broke her glasses.

Cherquentia Crawford  says the more hurtful assault came from the school's principal who allegedly suggested Dominique transfer to another school, instead of disciplining the students.

"I'm like, 'she got assaulted, I want to file charges. Where's your zero tolerance?'  I even said,  'this wouldn't happen in North Dallas.' He said, 'maybe she should transfer to a white school,' " the angry mother said.

The Dallas ISD is looking into the family's claim about Principal Keith Baker.

"My mom chose this school for a reason. Why transfer?" the student asked, "I'm an excellent student.  You never see me in the office."

District officials added although there is zero tolerance for fighting, it's up to the principal to issue any punishment.

They don't, however,  endorse suggesting parents transfer their children to avoid bullying.
