DISD Cuts 160 Central Staff Jobs
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The Dallas Independent School District cut 160 jobs Monday, the first jobs to be eliminated as the school board works to eliminate its $84 billion budget deficit.
In a news release late Monday afternoon, district spokesman Clyde Henderson said the cuts will save the district up to $3.6 million each year.
63 of the jobs were filled by district employees.
The statement also says that because central staff employees are not under contract, the superintendent did not need approval from the board to cut the jobs.
Henderson said the central staff employees who are losing their jobs will receive one month's pay.
Superintendent Michael Hinojosa has proposed cutting as many as 1,000 jobs throughout the district, but the board must approve the bulk of his plan. So far, that has not happened.
Teacher association groups are now putting up proposals to Hinojosa that deal with the inevitable: how teachers will be chosen for layoffs.
900 people directly tied to campuses, including 675 teachers, are slated for layoffs because of the school district's deficit.
Representatives from the two largest teachers' groups, along with the leader of the group representing principals, want the school district to follow a specific formula when targeting those set for job cuts.
The key, from their perspective, is protecting certified, high performing, veteran educators from the reduction in force.
Some people who work at the district's headquarters say they have already been told that layoffs are coming to their department.
The district's board will meet again on Thursday to try to make a decision about the situation.
