700 DISD Teachers Face Layoffs
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
The financial emergency at the Dallas Independent School District is evolving.
Last week officials revealed a $64 million mistake. Dallas I. S. D. Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa said the school district didn't have the funds to finance additional teaching positions it created last year.
Now the Dallas school district plans to declare a financial emergency, paving the way toward eliminating hundreds of teaching jobs immediately.
"We will have teachers who are currently in classrooms with students who won't be a month from now," said Dale Kaiser, N.E.A. Dallas.
They call it a "reduction in force." More than 700 teachers face job layoffs.
But teacher groups plan to fight.
"If this administration, which got us into this situation, is not held as accountable as teachers are in the classroom, then something is absolutely wrong," said Kaiser. "I've even got a recommendation for the superintendent: If you're going to cut teachers out, then take a fifty percent salary cut."
Dr. Hinojosa earns over $300,000 a year to oversee a school district with a $1 billion budget and 158,000 students.
A spokesperson with the district said Dr. Hinojosa does not plan on resigning. He plans on staying and has the support of the school board.
The school board plans to look at the issue on Friday to see where they can save money.
