Many DISD Students Get New Teachers
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Children across Dallas ISD campuses met new teachers today, as part of the ongoing layoff and reassignment plan created by
the school district's budget deficit.
450 teachers have been moved to new assignments.
Robin Streff is one of them. Last week she taught reading to third graders. Today she started teaching physical education at a new school.
The layoff and reassignment process is taking an emotional toll on the teachers who are being affected. It's also hard on the students, many of whom are too young to understand why their teachers are leaving.
"That was very hard," Streff said. "The children had made me cards on Friday, and this weekend I sat and read the cards. It was very hard, because I love those children so much."
The district is co-sponsoring a job fair to help its laid-off teachers find new jobs. It will be held on October 21 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in Ballroom C of the Dallas Convention Center, which is at 650 Griffin St. A DISD spokeswoman says "at least 110 prospective employers will participate in the event."
