Denton Fifth Grader Will Attend Inauguration

DENTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― In a class of gifted students at W. S. Ryan Elementary School in Denton, Anjali Balakrishna stood out.

"I nominated her for the National Young Scholar program, and when she got to Kerville to register for the program that summer, she pursued a forensics track," said Anjali's teacher, Violet Dickson.

Anjali didn't know graduating the special course would earn her more than just a grade: the course's elite alumni earned an invite to the inaugural.

"Its in Washington, D.C. and I'm going to stay at the hotel and I get to see the parade and hopefully I'll get to meet the president, which I'm really excited about," Anjali said. "I'm going to have to keep a journal there and people want me to take pictures."

We want Power Point presentations. We want everything. We even want to touch the hand that touched the hand," said Dickson. She added that Anjali will also get to "go to the inaugural ball and meet dignitaries and see the swearing in and the whole nine yards."

"My parents and I are very excited," said Anjali. "It was hard work."

Her hard work in the classroom earned her a front row seat to history.
