World War II Vet Receives High School Diploma
WEATHERFORD, Texas (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Amid all the pomp and circumstance at the Weatherford High School graduation, an 83-year-old man proudly sat among his fellow teenage graduates.
Thurman Carter enlisted to fight during World War II. At age 18, he was just two months shy of graduation from Weatherford High School.
"I wanted to do it, but I didn't know how," he said. "I was in the service three years, three months and 21 days."
He would have become a master sergeant if he had a high school diploma.
In his 83 years, Carter had become many things, including an oil man. Now he can add high school graduate to his long list of accomplishments.
"I'll frame it, and hang it on the wall," he said. "I never thought I'd ever get it."
His daughter, Liz Ann Williams, was cleaning out his garage and ran across an old report card with photo in a cigar box.
At the bottom of the report card was a hand written note signed by the principal of the school at the time. The note said Carter would be granted a high school diploma for his military service.
She took a chance and called Weatherford High School. The rest is history.
