DISD Board Discusses Hinojosa's Performance
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
A Dallas ISD school board committee went behind closed doors Monday to talk about Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa's job performance.
Board members said they are preparing a list of concerns after Dr. Hinojosa's
stunning announcement last month that the district ended last fiscal year with a $64 million deficit and that they were facing an $84 million deficit this year.
One school board member said they're essentially giving the superintendent a report card. Thanks to the financial crisis here, they say some of his grades are obviously not so good.
Because of the budget deficit, the district had to
eliminate more than 1,000 jobs, 375 of which were teachers. Despite the personnel changes, the district still has a $16 million deficit this year.
During an education symposium in Dallas Wednesday, Dr. Hinojosa apologized for the layoffs.
"I'm obviously the Chief Executive Officer and there have been other staff and we all share responsibility in this. But our responsibility is to find solutions and move forward. The solutions were very painful," said Dr. Hinojosa.
When asked if this was the beginning of the process to fire the superintendent, board member said Dr. Edwin Flores said, "Not as far as I'm concerned."
The school board will give the superintendent their list of concerns next week and call a special meeting.
"My responsibility is to see us through this (he almost says "mess") and make sure we move forward and I fully intend to continue working in the school district. I look forward to deal with the transformation plan to move forward," said Dr. Hinojosa.
