Putting Style In Standardized Dress

A lot of schools have chosen to adopt a standardized dress code, but standardized dress does not have to mean boring. Your child can make the look their own, and still stick to the rules.

For the most part, a standardized dress policy means that you have to wear a solid color collared shirt and a solid-colored bottom (usually khaki, navy or black). Your shirt must be tucked into your pants, and if the pants have belt loops, you must wear a belt. It usually means no denim and closed-toe shoes as well.

If your school requires a uniform, the rules of what you can and can't wear are a little more cut and dry... there's not quite as much flexibility in styling.

The most important thing parents should note is to check the exact requirements for your child's particular school.

Elementary Boys

Polo shirts are great closet staples, and are one of the best options available for a standardized dress code.

Your child can make a look all their own by layering a trendy screen-printed tee underneath.

Add even more interest with a brightly colored puffy vest.

Also look for interesting details on bottoms. Instead of a basic pleated docker-style, go for a trendy cargo style.

Elementary Girl

Girls can really use layering and accessories to add some pizzazz to a standardized dress code.

Layered shirts (tee under basic white collared shirt).

Colorful tights.

Bright shoes.

Headband.

Finish the look with a preppy argyle cardigan in case the A/C in the classroom gets a little chilly.

Even if your school does not adhere to a standardized dress code, all schools have dress codes. Here's how you can meet your school's dress code, and still be stylish!

High School Boy

Graphic screen printed tee shirts are the biggest trend for boys this year (also a great trend for girls).

Really allow students to express themselves – make sure they have no references to drugs, alcohol or any profanity. Remember, most schools require boys to tuck in their t-shirts. This is a great opportunity to add a super belt!

Pair it with the ultimate BTS staple - a great pair of jeans, but to meet dress codes they need to fit at the waist and not have visible tears.

I love the already worn-in feel of these... they look like they have holes, but are perfectly.

Dress-code compliant.

Add a zip up hoodie sweatshirt when the weather gets a little cooler, and your kid will look perfectly on-trend while still meeting the dress code.

Middle School Girl

Whether you have a favorite summer short dress or are looking at the new fall ones, dresses often provide a real dress code challenge.

Plaid dress with ruffle detail is the perfect starting piece for a great fall look.

First, to make sure the dress isn't too low cut, you can pair with a great tank or t-shirt to change the neckline.

Most schools won't allow spaghetti straps, but you can add a long boyfriend-style cardigan in a lightweight knit (a key look for fall) and it works perfectly.

If dress length is an issue, adding footless tights or leggings like this yellow pair make it a fun look that still fits the rules.

Make it your own with fun accessories like.

Layered gold chains.

A bright turquoise drawstring handbag.

Gray patent flats – this closed-toe flat style meets most school dress codes.
