Charges Dropped Against Former TCU Basketball Players

FORT WORTH (AP) ― Sexual assault charges against two former TCU basketball players accused of raping an unconscious woman in a dorm room have been dropped by prosecutors. Tarrant County prosecutors Tuesday dismissed aggravated sexual assault charges against Virgil Allen Taylor, 21, and his second cousin, Shannon Monroe Behling, 20.

"After consulting with the victim and her family and evaluating the evidence, we requested the court dismiss the case without prejudice," Assistant Tarrant County District Attorney Sheila Wynn said Wednesday.

Wynn said dismissing without prejudice means that if new evidence arises in the future, they could reopen the case.

Taylor and Behling were among three former TCU athletes accused of raping an 18-year-old student in a dorm room in October 2006.

In February, an aggravated sexual assault charge was dropped against Lorenzo Labell Jones, a 21-year-old who played football for the Horned Frogs.

Police said Taylor lured the woman to his dorm on the pretext of paying her back for a hamburger. The woman told police she was given a sports drink that caused her to pass out before waking up briefly to find Taylor having sex with her.

Behling's attorney, Glynis McGinty, said she's happy her client can get on with his life.

Taylor, who said he grew up around the corner from Behling in Columbia, S.C., said he wants to finish college and hopes to become a clinical psychiatrist.

Shawn Kornegay, a university spokeswoman, said the three "remain separated from the university."

"They went through a process more than a year ago that determined they had violated our code of conduct, and they were removed at that time," she said.
