FWISD Students Start Text Messaging Study Chain

Compiled From Staff Reports
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― The Fort Worth Independent School District made a bold decision when it shut down schools until May 11. Critics have been concerned that students would congregate and potentially spread the virus.

Instead, students began a text messaging study chain.

Student Genesis Duran, 14, said it began with a text message from her friend Yeika. "She goes, 'Let's study because we're not going to be studying for almost a week and a half, so that we can help each other and stay focused and everything.'"

When they got stumped on a concept, the eighth-graders called their teacher.

"I did not realize that so many of the students took their classroom journals home with them to study," said science teacher Michael Sanderson.

The students focused on science because they were scheduled to take the science portion of the TAKS test last Thursday.

"I wanted to ace the Science TAKS Test and the social studies test. I was ready for it," said Genesis.

Genesis' mother, Rosa Duran, said she was concerned her daughter was spending too much time texting. "It was like 12:30 in the night and I said, 'Genesis, what are you doing?' 'I'm texting, Mom.' 'Why?' 'Because we are studying.'"

Genesis wants to become a doctor. Her study chain now includes about a dozen students from her school.

There are now five study chains made up of classmates who attend Kirkpatrick Middle School.
