Thousands Of Students Move Into UNT Dorms

DENTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― The University of North Texas in Denton had the task of helping 3,000 students move into their dorms Sunday. The annual day is called "Fun Day."

The students were assisted by a small army of parents, volunteers, staff and new technology.

Freshman Andrew Tellez said he came equipped with "a printer, a rug and it looks like some other stuff," he said. "I didn't pack half this stuff. My parents did."

Dorm resident John Eckerd said he brought the essentials: an X-Box, computer, refrigerator… and Guitar Hero."

Student Ted Minette described the students moving into Bruce Hall. "A lot of music majors here; a lot of creative types," he said. "We're the weird dorm!"

Bruce Hall is 61-years-old. "It's pretty old and decrepit, but whatever<' said Tellez. "I guess I can deal with it."

This year, Bruce Hall has computerized check-ins. It used to take students about 20 minutes to fill out the forms.

Now, hall director Margaret Lamar said, "We've been doing it in about 20 seconds."

That leaves students with more time to settle into their new home.

"Now we just have to figure out how to arrange it so we can walk around," said Tellez.

Students will have a little more than a week to adjust to their new digs and surroundings. School starts August 25.
