Texas Plant Pulls Tire-Burning Request
DALLAS (AP) ―
A cement factory near Dallas has withdrawn its state request to burn about 145 million pounds of old tires a year because of a federal crackdown on the Texas air pollution permitting process.
The plan to burn the tires -- characterized by environmentalists as reckless -- was withdrawn by Dallas-based Texas Industries on Tuesday.
TXI spokesman David Perkins said the company is re-evaluating the plan. The proposal was detailed in a type of state permit request that the Environmental Protection Agency said recently does not comply with the Clean Air Act.
Perkins says burning tires lowers emissions.
Environmental groups and area lawmakers cheered the move.
TXI is one of three plants in Midlothian that make up the nation's largest concentration of cement factories.
