Inexpensive Ideas To Decorate This Holiday Season
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
While budgets are tight, there are still ways to decorate your home with the spirit of holidays that are easy and inexpensive. There are plenty of special touches that cost only pennies and will create a setting to remember.
Using items from your home and local food markets, mixed with bit of creativity, you can design a holiday home that's a treat for all five senses. Event planner and caterer Andrea Correale turned some common items into a festive setting and spent almost nothing.
"Pennies on the dollar. If I didn't buy it at the supermarket I went to the dollar store. The dollar store has all kinds of things to inspire you to make beautiful decorations," says Correale.
Correale used stickers that cost less than a dollar and transformed them into a candle. She glued together ornaments for a holiday sculpture and turned foam shapes into anchors for creative centerpieces.
For entertaining, a table with a raised glass top and ornaments underneath makes a cheery statement.
"About $4 did this entire table, we happen to be using it as a bar today," she says.
The dollar store had decals for glassware along with some cheery red bows that cost just $1.49. You can even ook to the supermarket for decorating ideas too ...
"One can of spray paint and you can do artichoke and pears and apples," she says. "We took a bag of mixed nuts and put them in a vase and just tied a little ribbon around them."
Use red hots and sprayed pinecones for cheery centerpiece, and keep the spray paint handy for more pinecones for a classic holiday look.
"By creating a beautiful environment, a very holiday type feeling and tantalizing the senses you're actually giving a gift to the people that come visit you in your home," she says.
Some other ideas: frame old Christmas cards and put them around the house, or simmer some cider with nutmeg and cinnamon and fill your home with scents of the season.
