Additional Baggage Fees For AA Take Effect Sunday

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― First passengers had to worry about keeping their bag under 50 pounds to avoid a fee. Now, starting Sunday, American Airlines will charge $15 each way for the first bag checked. The second checked bag costs $25 each way.

The change for American Airlines goes into affect for domestic tickets bought Sunday and onwards.

Some passengers say they feel trapped.

"You can't fly without taking luggage with you," said Brittany Sanders, who is traveling with American Airlines. "The whole situation with not having to take liquids and things like that – it's kind of a catch 22. You want to take your luggage, but then you have to pay. But then if you take it with you, they are going to throw away your toiletries. So what do you do?"

There are several exceptions. Top-tier travelers won't have to pay. Consumers who purchase a full fair ticket the day of travel also don't have to pay the extra fee.

American Airlines officials say fuel costs are the reason for the new baggage fee.

United U.S. and Spirit also have baggage fees. As of July 1, Southwest Airlines will be the only U.S. carrier that won't have any additional baggage fees.
