BBB Warns Of Employment Ad For Cleaning Company

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Officials at the Better Business Bureau of Dallas are warning people against a help-wanted ad for a cleaning company.

The ad promised good pay, flexibility and perks.

"I'm a teenage mom, and it would be good for me, my child," said Kandace Thomas. "It had benefits too. Who wouldn't want a job like that?"

Thomas interviewed with National Commercial Cleaners in Dallas in late March.

"They told us that we'd be working with four other people, and we would be cleaning federal buildings," said Thomas.

The company said the job required a background check, and she would have to pay for it.

"We were supposed to bring $64.50 down for the background check," she said.

Thomas paid with a money order and heard nothing. "We tried to contact them for two weeks straight, and no one answered the phone," she said.

When she filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, she received a letter from the company telling her she got the job. However, she would have to get bonded and registered and pay for a business name as a contractor.

"That's not the position that I applied for, and I didn't know that I would have to do all that extra stuff," she said.

Thomas asked for her money back. She hasn't received a refund yet.

An employee at the company names Amanda said, "They pay for a background check. They receive a background check in the mail, and they get the refund after they start working 90 days after."

But the Better Business Bureau in Dallas and in several other cities lists similar complaints to Thomas'. A BBB spokesperson said the company may be misleading prospective employees, and she warns against companies that charge for a background check.

Thomas said she's learned her lesson. "Make sure you do research, especially when they're asking for money," she said. "I don't want this happening to anyone else."
