Are Restaurant Diet Options Really Low In Fat?

DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― Are you trying to make healthy choices when you go out to eat? A class action lawsuit claims that you may be getting duped by some popular restaurants. A 37-year-old woman from Seattle is behind the lawsuit. She told CBS 11 News over the phone that, despite picking lowfat items, she was not losing weight.

An investigation by a news organization in Seattle confirmed her suspicions, so the woman paid a visit with her lawyers.

CBS 11 News went to several local restaurants to speak with North Texans about the claims.

Jessica Roma is exactly the type of person that this national class action lawsuit is hoping to attract. "I have a wedding in November, so I'm on a diet," she said. "I'm worried about what I'm eating."

Roma deliberately picked Chili's because of their Guiltless Grill menu options. However, according to the lawsuit, she may have been duped.

The lawsuit alleges that the Guiltless Salmon has 35.5 grams of fat, not the 14 grams listed on the menu. It also claims that the Guiltless Chicken Sandwich has 23.3 grams of fat, not the 8 grams shown on the menu.

The claims are based on investigations that used laboratory testing to calculate actual fat grams.

"I would be upset at the restaurant, because I work very hard to follow my diet," said Chili's patron Jessica Romeroll.

Also named in the lawsuit are On the Border and Romano's Macaroni Grill. All three restaurant chains are owned by Dallas-based Brinker International. CBS 11 News contacted them about the lawsuit, but they did not comment on pending litigation.
