FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
From golf, to baseball to music Fort Worth has had a variety of events this weekend.
It all translates into big dollars for the city at a time when Fort Worth is facing a budget deficit.
"We are both from Venezuela," says Miguel Angel.
Angel in his wife are in town for the Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial Country Club.
"I'm a golf fan and that's basically the reason why we choose this area," explains Angel.
Golf fans had plenty of options this weekend.
After the thrills of the greens some headed to an afternoon baseball game on the TCU campus for the NCAA Regionals which include the Horned Frogs.
Perhaps the most international event drawing thousands is the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at Bass Hall.
"I came from New York," says Julianne Williams with her sister Carol Fletcher in from Houston.
"I meet my sister here for the Cliburn every 4 years," says Fletcher "We've been doing it for 20 years."
A busy weekend for the city means full hotels and restaurants and money going into city coffers at a time when the city has a budget deficit of 61-million-dollars.
"Any sales tax revenue right now that is generating, any hotel occupancy tax that is generated, is going to help us with our challenge to meet our budget needs," explains Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief.
Last year the Colonial Golf Tournament generated about 33-million-dolalrs for the city.
Four years ago the Cliburn brought in more than 2-million-dollars.
For the city anything will help.
The mayor says this is really the city's chance to shine.
Even in a recession he says by the size of the crowds he's seen everywhere it could be a profitable weekend.
