'Tis The Season For Scammers

DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― The holidays seem to bring out the best and the worst in people.

"There are more scams during the holiday season because they know people are looking for extra money, and they might fall for something," said Jeannette Kopko with the Better Business Bureau. "People also have this desire to help out others, and so they may fall for charity scams."

Holiday scammers are out in force this season. That's why the Internal Revenue Service, the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission are all issuing warnings.

The I.R.S. says phony e-mails are being sent with the promise of a tax refund for your credit card. You supply your credit card number, they rip you off.

"If you get an e-mail, and it's unsolicited from the I.R.S., then you can be sure it's not the I.R.S. that is contacting you. It's a criminal," said Clay Sanford with the I.R.S.

Shoppers who like to pull out their credit cards or check books are being told to keep them hidden while standing in line. You never know who's looking over your shoulder. The best advice is to wait until you have reached the cashier before pulling out the plastic.

The F.T.C. says this year, $33 billion in gifts will be purchased online.

"If you purchase online, use a credit card, because with a credit card, you are protected as consumers," said David Griggs with the F.T.C. "If you use a checking account number, you have less protection over the internet."

Finally, don't let the Christmas spirit cloud your judgment. If you're going to give money, make sure the charity is a recognized organization.
