Local Phone Scam Promises Early Tax Refunds
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
There is a new scam in the works across North Texas, where people are promised holiday cash and early tax refunds.
The IRS and the Fort Worth Police Department are now sending out a warning about the scam after nearly a dozen Fort Worth residents like 89-year-old Loraine Keith were called with tax refund promises and bank account requests.
"He said, 'This is the IRS,'" explained Keith, one of the would-be victims. However, her late husband was a cop, and she suspected something fishy about the entire phone call. "When he said he wanted my account number, I thought, no way," Keith continued. "I didn't give him anything."
Another man, who did not wish to be identified, was not as lucky. He was one of the victims who gave out his bank account information while busy with other things. Immediately afterward, he regretted releasing the information.
Every one of the potential victims called the police immediately following the phony IRS call. According to the victims, the callers had accents and sometimes gave fake verification numbers.
