Keller Family Says Mold In Home Making Them Sick

KELLER (CBS 11 News) ― A family in Keller says that mold in their house is making them sick, and the builder is not doing anything to fix the problem.

"I work hard for what I do, and this is our first home," said Jeremy Castro. He and his family were proud of the new home in Keller. But shortly after moving in last year, they noticed that something was making their son, Jordan, sick.

"Everytime he would go to lay down, he would throw up," explained Emilia Castro.

Months later, the Castro family noticed a problem in their master bathroom. They had an inspector look at it, and there was mold growing in the wall.

Jordan started sleeping and bathing in other rooms and his symptoms disappeared.

But that was just the beginning of problems for the Castro family.

"I brought it up to the builder," said Emilia. "I said there's mold here, and he said that's normal."

For several months now, the Castros have been trying to get the builder, Coleman Homes, to come and fix the problem. Emilia has kept records of the dozens of phone calls, faxes and letters that she has sent to the company.

"The president of Coleman Homes called and said he was going to do it," Emilia told CBS 11 News. " That was three weeks ago. Then, I didn't hear anything for over a week."

Frustrated, Emilia put up a sign on her garage, detailing the problems she has faced. "I didn't want anyone to buy a Coleman home," she said.

Now, the family keeps their bedroom blocked off while sleeping in the living room. They refuse to give up until the problem is fixed, and hope that one day, the home will be something to be proud of once again.

CBS 11 News tried to contact someone from Coleman Homes, but nobody would return phone calls.
