Frisco Working To Accommodate More Electric Cars

Arezow Doost
FRISCO (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ― Electric cars could soon be on the same road with fast-driving gas powered cars in one North Texas city. In fact, Frisco is looking at possibly reducing the speed limit on certain streets to make this happen.

If Gary Moseley could trade in his gas-guzzling truck for a neighborhood electric car, he said he would do it in a heartbeat. It currently costs him about $80 to fill up his truck.

"I would hope I wouldn't get run over," said Moseley. "They would have to make them where they would go faster."

The electric cars can only go 25 miles per hour. Texas law doesn't allow low-speed electric cars on roads with speed limits over 35 miles per hour.

"We are always exploring ways to give our citizens the option to protect their environment and to save fuel costs," said Frisco Mayor Maher Maso.

Mayor Maso said the city is looking at lowering the speed limit on certain streets or designating the right lane on a roadway for the slower cars.

"People are trying to live closer to home to save money," said Mayor Maso. "With tollways around us, with cost of fuel, people want to try to save money and to save the environment."

Mayor Maso has asked city staff to get him a huge map of Frisco. He wants to see how people are getting from Point A to Point B on streets with speed limit signs less than 35 miles per hour.

Though some love the green initiative, others are weary.

"People like to get from one place to another as fast as possible," said Moseley.

Ultimately, it will be up to city council to decide in the coming months.
