Some GM Car Brands May Become Extinct
ARLINGTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Some car brands may go extinct as the result of the auto industry crash. In its restructuring plan, General Motors said it would focus on just four brands: Chevy, Cadillac, Buick and GMC.
General Motors has not officially announced any plans to get rid of Saturn or some of its other nameplates like Pontiac, Saab or Hummer.
"If GM is going to succeed, they are going to have to downsize," said Dan Short, TCU accounting professor.
Short is the former dean of TCU's business school. He says GM nameplates like Hummer may go away for good, but he believes Saturn could survive by being sold.
"I'd be very, very surprised if every single brand that is on the chopping block simply disappears," he said.
People who own the vehicles at risk worry about how they'd get replacement parts. But the biggest hit could come when the affected car owners go to sell their cars.
"If the car has been discontinued and is no longer manufactured, it can be a serious impact on resale value," said Short.
The car makers in the U.S. are required to continue making replacement parts for several years after a car is discontinued, Short continued. Getting repairs shouldn't be a problem for a while.
