Study: Weak Economy Encouraging People To Donate

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Local charities are holding a collective breath this holiday season.
A study released Monday by Harris Interactive says the weak economy could actually encourage people to give more.
Tarrant County residents waited in long lines at a Cowboy Santas location, trying to get their name on the list of those needing donations this year.
The Toys for Tots warehouse in Fort Worth is almost empty with organizers waiting for donations to come in.
"Hopefully the economy will get a whole lot better and we can fill this warehouse," said Gunnery Sgt. James Kenrick, Toys for Tots.
Last year, approximately 200,000 toys were donated. Even with a sluggish economy, organizers are hoping for more this year. Toys for Tots will take new and unwrapped toys big and small through December 13.
While some charities are still waiting for donations, others tell a different story. Catholic Charities is reporting a steady flow of giving.
"Actually, we're seeing an increase - not only in time given, but in actual financial gifts," said Mary Jo Dorn with Catholic Charities. "It seems like people understand that there is a need and they understand how can we help - what can we do to make things better."
