Nixed Plan May Help Snyder Plaza Parking Problem

UNIVERSITY PARK (CBS 11 News) ― One of the oldest shopping centers in North Texas is still a favorite among shoppers. The shops in the plaza are unique and the restaurants are well known, but Snyder Plaza in University Park also has a huge problem the city doesn't know how to solve.

The area needs hundreds of new parking spaces. The city released a report Thursday, which states more than 700 more parking spaces are needed. The lack of parking is costing the city and retailers a lot of money in lost revenue.

"I know a lot of times there are stores in here that I want to go to that I don't because I'll do a couple circles and can't get a parking space and I've got three kids and I can't walk a mile to go to a store," said shopper Kimberly Johnson.

After studying the problem for more than a year, a committee of merchants and home owners agreed to essentially revitalize Snyder Plaza, which was originally built in the late 1920s.

A year ago, the owner of the Chase Bank Building wanted to build a high-rise with lots of new parking. The site is located just south of Snyder Plaza. After objections, the planned was tabled.

Now city officials are looking to renew the plan and create more room for parking.
