Tips For Saving Money On Flowers For Your Wedding
FORT WORTH (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Wedding season is right around the corner. But as money grows tighter in these tough economic times, dreams of a wonderful wedding with fabulous fresh flowers are wilting for many brides.
But they don't have to die. You can save a bundle on your bouquet by shopping at your local flower market. On average, the price of flowers is half of the price listed at a florist.
'Real Simple' editor Jaimee Zanzinger said there are just a few tips to successfully buying your own flowers
Make sure the stems are moist and healthy. Also, avoid tightly closed buds because Zanzinger said, "They may never open."
Buy flowers that are in season and grown locally.
"It doesn't cost anything to transport them from states away or even fly them in," said Zanzinger. "If you're having tulips, you don't want them flown in from Holland."
The next element to consider is presentation. Instead of a $500 arrangement, bundle up tulips with a simple ribbon. A beautiful bouquet can be created at a price of just $9.
Designer David Stark said carnations should not be dismissed. They can sell for as little as $5 a bunch.
"If it's like a lush carpet and it's not mixed with baby's breath, it's beautiful," he said.
Also consider placing mirrors under flowers to expand their appearance on tables.
Forget expensive boutonnieres for the men. Instead, pin a single flower to their jacket lapel.
Designers say, just let your imagination bloom.
