Surgery Sidelines Cowboys CB Newman Again
Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman will be out at least another month after having surgery to repair a sports hernia.
Newman missed the preseason and the season opener because of a groin injury. He then played in three games before getting hurt again in practice last week.
The earliest Newman is likely to return is mid-November.
Newman had surgery Friday in North Carolina, where he had met with Dr. William Meyers, one of the nation's top sports hernia specialists.
Newman, the 2003 first-round pick going into his sixth NFL season, earned his first Pro Bowl appearance last season when he had 62 tackles and four interceptions after missing the first two games of the regular season with a right foot injury.
In his first four seasons, Newman started every game.
With Newman out, Adam "Pacman" Jones will remain in the starting lineup -- at least for Sunday's game against Arizona.
The NFL is investigating Jones' scuffle with his bodyguard, but said its review won't be completed until next week.
The Dallas Cowboys had already said they won't discipline Jones. But it's unclear if the league will take any punitive action against Jones, who only six weeks ago was fully reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell from a 17-month suspension, including the entire 2007 season, that followed a series of off-field problems.
Jones got into a scuffle at an upscale downtown Dallas hotel late Tuesday night with a member of a security detail the Cowboys provided to be with the cornerback at all times.
Dallas will be without two safeties Sunday. Pro Bowler Roy Williams (fractured forearm) returned to practice on a limited basis this week but will miss his fourth consecutive game. Patrick Watkins (neck) is also out.
