Jones Reveals Name Of Cowboys' New Stadium
By Kent Chapline, with contributions from Joel Thomas and Bill Jones
ARLINGTON (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones revealed a secret today that a lot of people have been waiting to hear: the name of the team's new stadium being built in Arlington.
Jones says it will be called Cowboys Stadium.
"When we look at it from the interest and tradition of the Cowboys for the stadium," Jones said, "the stadium the Cowboys are going to be in is to be called Cowboys Stadium."
The name has been the subject of much speculation for several months. In February,
Jones said he was negotiating with a company for naming rights, although he wouldn't say which company.
He repeated that Wednesday, but said that with today's economy, spending $10 to $20 million could lead to bad public perception for a sponsor. 'The naming rights thing will be delayed," Jones said, "but it will not be forgone."
Some fans we talked to today said they'd like to see different names for the building. Among the ideas we got are "The Dallas Cowboys at Arlington Stadium," "Arlington Cowboys Stadium" and "Tom Landry Stadium."
The first event at the stadium will be a concert by country star George Strait on June 6th. The facility will not be ready to host football games at that point, but Jones has said it will be "concert-ready."
With a sleek retractable roof, seating capacity of 100,000, and the largest HD video boards ever built, the Cowboys' stadium already has been a magnet for the biggest events in sports, securing the 2010 NBA All-Star game, the 2011 Super Bowl and the 2014 NCAA men's Final Four -- plus, of course, all home games for "America's Team."
The Cowboys' first regular-season game in the new stadium will be on Labor Day.
