Two Texas Colleges Put On Probation
Texas Tech, Texas Southern Could Both Face Loss Of Accreditation
NEW ORLEANS (AP) ―
A regional accrediting organization has put Texas Tech and Texas Southern universities on probation.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools says it took action against Tech after the Lubbock school failed to show that its curriculum met college-level competencies.
Texas Southern in Houston was placed on probation because of its poor financial picture.
The association issued the probations during an annual meeting yesterday in New Orleans.
Tech spokeswoman Margaret Lutherer says the school put a program in place last year to make assessments of its curriculum. She says the probation was issued because Tech didn't have the results ready in time for the association's meeting.
Texas Southern board chairman Glenn Lewis says he's confident the school can do what's necessary to regain accreditation.
A loss of accreditation could prevent a school from participating in federal financial-aid programs.
