Nintendo's "Metroid" Gets Prime-Time Treatment
REDMOND, Wash. (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
Nintendo is giving one of their most popular gaming franchises 'prime-time' treatment in a special release for their Wii home video game console. The most recent adventures of female bounty hunter Samus Aran are colliding for "Metroid Prime Trilogy," a single disc collection of three acclaimed titles.
Available on August 24 at a suggested retail price of $49.99, the first-person shooter game combines the story arc of three titles into one seamless package.
The original "Metroid Prime" and it's sequel, "Metroid Prime 2: Echoes," were originally GameCube titles, now getting revamped for release on the Wii. A new control scheme will bring them more in line with the third game in the series, "Metroid Prime 3: Corruption," released for the Wii in August 2007. Plus, all three games feature support for widescreen televisions.
Back in March, Nintendo started re-releasing some of their older GameCube titles with updated controls, developed to take advantage of the Wii's unique motion-sensitive remote. So far, only three games have been updated ("Pikmin," "Mario Power Tennis" and "Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat"), but none have featured such an elaborate package as the "Metroid Prime Trilogy." The move is likely aimed at adult fans looking for a solid collector's item.
"'Metroid Prime Trilogy' puts the best first-person adventures all in one place, with a host of new additions that make these three timeless titles more engaging than ever," said Cammie Dunaway, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Nintendo of America. "A great deal of care and detail has gone into 'Metroid Prime Trilogy,' providing longtime fans with new ways to experience the games they love."
The "Metroid" franchise began back in 1986 on Nintendo's original 8-bit NES system. The action-packed series follows a female bounty hunter named Samus Aran as she fights through strange worlds and faces dangerous alien creatures. Several "Metroid" games have been developed across nearly all of Nintendo's gaming platforms. The "Metroid Prime" subseries began in 2002.
In addition to updated controls, brand new unlockable content is made available for fans who play through the three games and complete various objectives along the way. This content includes concept artwork, music tracks and a screen capture tool to take pictures of the in-game action.
