Reunion & Texas Stadium: A Hollywood Ending?
DALLAS (CBS 11 / TXA 21) ―
What if the next big movie explosion happened right here in North Texas?
Hollywood has been blowing up buildings since the beginning of blockbuster films. The Dallas Film Commission hopes to capitalize on that big bang theory.
"Let's use this as a carrot and try to get some film production out of this," said Janis Burklund with the Dallas Film Commission.
The cities of Dallas and Irving have two very big carrots to offer in the form of Reunion Arena and Texas Stadium.
"The studio could come in and say, 'We'll do some of this demolition for you and save you the cost of doing it,'" said Burklund.
One way or another, both venues must come down. So why not have a big movie studio do the dirty work?
"The notion that someone out there might be looking for a stadium to blow up and we just happened to have one is actually good news," said Mark Thompson, Irving Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Cities across the country spend millions imploding buildings. By pitching producers who need big explosions for their movies, the film commission could save Dallas and Irving millions in demolition costs.
Officials from both cities say they are very open to the idea.
Burklund says she is going to call studios in Los Angeles that have been friendly to North Texas in the past.
